The Mummyâs Curse
Ever since 18th-century Egyptologists started opening the tombs of ancient pharaohs, tales of curses have persisted. According to the superstitions, the high priests of Egypt sealed the tombs with curses dooming whoever dared disturb the kingâs passage into the afterlife. Some said that the curses were even engraved on the doors of the tombs, and actually spelled out how intruders would meet their end.
Donât worry, not all of you will die.
The most famous of the superstitions is known as King Tutâs Curse. When the pharaohâs tomb was opened in 1922, several of those who worked on the excavation suffered unexplained seizures and died within years of the tombâs discovery. Lord Carnarvon, the British archeologist who financed the dig, died just a few weeks after the tomb was opened. Although the press has cited twenty-one as the number of those who died after working on the tomb, the number was closer to half a dozen. Scientists have speculated that the tombs actually contained toxins that may have contributed to the illnesses and deaths. However, many of those who worked on the dig lived into their eighties.
